Nearby

The towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum - preserved in their Roman state thanks to the ash from Mount Vesuvius - are a short train ride from Naples . The island of Capri (www.capritourism.com), with its gardens, grottoes, Roman villas, orchards and vineyards, is well worth a visit, and is only 40 minutes away by hydrofoil. The volcanic island of Ischia is interesting for its hot springs and thermal pools, and is one hour away from Naples (depart from either Mergellina or Molo Beverello).

The renowned Amalfi Coast is best visited in October (when you can benefit from crowd-free sunbathing) and April (for the profusion of flowers). The Sentieri degli Dei ('Footpath of the Gods') is arguably the most impressive, as it follows the ridge that divides the Amalfi Coast from the Bay of Naples .

SITA (+39 081 6106711, www.sita-on-line.it) runs buses to Positano. You can also take the Circumvesuviana rail as far as Meta , then take a bus to Positano and Amalfi.
