The region of Emilia-Romagna is a bit touristy but for good reason
– it’s a fascinating area, with good transport links and foodie
attractions. Parma, a beautiful, relaxed city famous for its
ham and cheese, as well as for its links to the composer Giuseppe
Verdi, is well worth a visit, as is Modena, where you can pick
up some expensive balsamic vinegar. Just south of Modena,
Maranello is home to Ferrari and a petrolhead’s paradise.
Next to the company’s factory and test track is the Galleria
Ferrari (via Dino Ferrari), which celebrates the imperious
car-making dynasty.
Alternatively, hire a Fiat and explore the Apennine Hills to the
south of Bologna (drop in on Poretta Terme, with its
calming thermal waters), or take the plunge in hedonistic
Rimini, which in high season compels and repulses equally.
